Christmas break is coming in one month!!

Just got flight tickets to Japan for Christmas break! Yay!!
It will be so nice to spend christmas and new year with my family and old friends... cant wait!!
But before, I have to face the real. I still haven't finished many of projects our class went through... Today, I was trying a lot of different compositions for the Kelpie (water horse) project. To convince people that this creature really exists, I thought a poster of circus could be nice. In a circus, all the impossible things can be possible. I was really excited and took long time for the first one, thinking it would work well as a poster. But then I did different images and felt that the first one might be too busy. It's funny, the more I did experiments, the simpler those images became... As you can see from the last image...it is...minimal.

My Little Business Cards!

I attended an international book fair in Serbia for 6 days!! Before going to Serbia, I created more business cards with new design. This time I used double sided print, folded the card into half and cropped the edges on top to make a shape of roof. It's a handmade cards with low cost, but hopefully it gave people an impression of something more personal than normal business card, rather small gift from me...

second project of this year

They are my first experiment for the second project in uni. I have been asked to choose one of those mysterious creatures and make an image of it. I decided to pick the Kelpie, water horse in celtic myth. To show its mysterious characteristic, I am thinking of making cutout and shadow play.  This is my first time to try shadow play, and I am having fun! The only problem is how I should tell the audience the texture of water by using paper and shadow....

The first project

This is one of my final images for the first project this year...
The project was about editorial illustration for an article, which was about problem of educational system for students with disability. The article says when a student with disability goes to a college, it is difficult for him and his family to find the way to keep same level of support as they got in previous school. The government tries to offer support, however it's too complicated to understand clearly. Education for students with disability is like the cliff edge for them, and once their education ended, it is very hard to find further pathway.
My idea was: a student isolated in the sea, wanting to go back to the main land but doesn't know how...
In the second image, I drew someone trying to save him, reaching out his arm form a boat. I liked the idea of a piece of ice floating in the middle of the sea, but it was really really hard to make it visually good. I am not very happy with the result, to be honest. Tatiana, my class mate, told me my problem is that I never know when to finish drawing and eventually over do it. I think she is right!! To make it simple is more difficult than to make it too much.... My drawings on worksheets looked much better than "finished" image. The second image was worse. Because I did not practice compared to the first one, it simply looked "unfinished"...

More drawing for Opening Bank Account

This time I added more personal taste of mine, which is stencil. I enjoyed creating the pattern and adding the texture on fish.

open your bank account in UK

I started a new project for Commonplace, a student survival guide to University of the Arts London.
The given topic is how to open a bank account in UK. It is always tricky to create an account, especially for international students. I know it because I had same experience when I came to London...
To make the information simpler and clearer, I am supposed to use simple words and illustration to support the explanation. I am thinking of using a treasure box and a key to open it, and maybe some dangerous animals for some info which you need be very careful about.

"in search of Nair"

As I mentioned before, I am doing some stop motion animations for my friend who is making a documentary film about her lost mother.
In addition of animations, I have been asked to do typography for the credit and names of the interviewees in the film. We might use some of my illustrations for the credit as well...

Credentials

I have another task to be finished by thursday. This image will be the cover of my CD-R that contains my pdf portfolio. I used there small drawings for my cv, pdf portfolio, and even title of blog! (you can see it on top of blog, yeah?) They are not just random doodles...Each represents part of me. For example, the compass means that I am from a great distance away, and also means my pathway to illustration. Bird is my passion for drawing animals, and the rabbit in the hole is my hidden potential to be revealed...Well I will not explain any more or it will sound a bit too dramatic. But you can guess what the fork expresses, can't you :D

My "the Owl and the Pussycat"

Yesterday, we had the crit for our final project, illustration for short stories.
This project was quite free and I enjoyed making sweets for children's recipe book, but I also had difficult time with photography and editing. (I am still not happy enough with the composition!)
But thanks for this project, I learnt a lot of new things...
Other classmates' works were brilliant!! So many different ideas, techniques!

Sunday 6 May 2012

ok, time to blog!!!

Haven't uploaded my blog for ages...but it doesn't mean I wasn't doing creative works!!
I've been so so busy, doing 3 different projects for uni, and some other personal projects. The photos above are taken for one of uni projects which is illustration for a short story. Yes, "illustration". Who says you can only draw with pen and ink to tell a story??
The given story I chose is "the Owl and the Pussycat". Since this is nonsense poem which is about the owl and the pussycat getting married, I decided to create crazy nonsense sweets for their wedding. I made 4 different scenes with different sweets for each, and took about 500 photos... But I strongly feel I need to know more technique for photograph...
Anyway, I will chose nicer of all, and edit to make a recipe book for children. I may add some hand drawings on the images...

This is also my book!!!

Finally, I finished two dummy books... A lot of friends helped me and gave me good ideas to make these books look nicer. A friend of mine spent a lot of time with me to teach me how to edit images with photoshop. One of friends, who has great sense of writing, helped me translate Baku's story into English. I am more than happy!!

This is my book!!!
